Gratitude and Stuff

You might think our title is one of Brittany Murphy’s lines from Clueless. “What are you doing tonight?” “I don’t know, stuff.”[Que the 90s leopard print, bubble gum, and a hair flip] But we actually mean how gratitude applies to your stuff.

What better way to make gratitude tangible than to apply it to your closet?

We all know a few simple truths:

  1. Whether clothes in our closet or the ornament you made in 3rd grade, we have an emotional connection to our stuff.

  2. Letting go can be tough.

  3. Without the extra things we don’t use, the things we do use shine more.

We’ve been reading The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Author Marie Kondo recommends using gratitude to ease the emotional burn of getting rid of stuff. Some items are meant to be in our lives for a long time and some for a short time.

When you’re trying to identify what to get rid of, ask yourself honestly what items have already fulfilled their purpose. Then tell yourself that you’re grateful for what they brought your life. “By acknowledging their contribution and letting them go with gratitude, you will be able to truly put the things you own, and your life, in order.”

These items served you well and will now be free to serve someone else.
